Villa-Lobos’s Descobrimento do Brasil (Discovery of Brazil) Suite No. 2 contains three movements:
-
Impressão moura (Moorish Impression) – a rhythmically complex piece with modal harmonies and layered textures that evoke a stylized view of North African or Iberian influence.
-
Adágio sentimental – slower and lyrical, with an expansive melodic line and a subdued orchestral palette that lends it an introspective tone.
-
Cascavel – more energetic and rhythmic, its title refers to a rattlesnake, and the music reflects this with sharply articulated motifs, percussion effects, and a sense of forward momentum.
The full suite runs approximately 13 minutes in performance. Though concise, it showcases Villa-Lobos’s characteristic blend of Brazilian color, cinematic gesture, and orchestral refinement.
