George Gershwin’s An American in Paris is a symphonic poem that vividly captures the energy and charm of Paris through the perspective of an American traveler. Premiered in 1928, the piece blends jazz elements with classical orchestration, reflecting Gershwin’s fusion of American and European musical traditions. Inspired by his own experiences in Paris, Gershwin sought to musically depict the city’s bustling streets, incorporating lively rhythms and vibrant harmonies to evoke its atmosphere.

This 2025 Corrected Edition fixed errors found in over 50 pages of errata of F. Campbell-Watson's revised version, added proper divisi for String parts, orchestral cues for every instrument, convenient page turns and fixing dozens of wrong/missing notes when compared to previous prints.

The score is notable for its colorful orchestration and innovative use of jazz idioms within a symphonic framework. One of its most famous features is the inclusion of real taxi horns, adding an authentic and whimsical touch. The music shifts between exuberant, syncopated melodies and more introspective, blues-infused passages, representing both the excitement and occasional homesickness of the traveler. A sweeping violin theme in the second half expresses longing, but the piece ultimately returns to its initial celebratory mood, embodying the joy of exploring a new city.

An American in Paris remains one of Gershwin’s most beloved compositions, celebrated for its rhythmic energy and rich harmonies. Its successful integration of jazz and orchestral music helped solidify Gershwin’s reputation as a composer who bridged American and European traditions. The piece’s lasting popularity was further cemented by its adaptation in the 1951 film An American in Paris, ensuring its place as a cornerstone of both the concert hall and popular culture.
