Bacewicz’s Musica sinfonica in tre movimenti (IGB 21) was composed in 1965, dedicated to conductor Witold Rowicki, and premiered on 6 September 1965 by the Warsaw Philharmonic under his baton at the Stockholm Festival. The suite unfolds in three connected movements—Tesi, Dialogo, and Gioco. The work balances vibrant wind writing, polished brass chorales, and a rich tapestry of percussion and harp alongside the string section.
Throughout, Bacewicz employs clear motivic gestures and contrapuntal interplay to define each movement’s character: the taut, assertive opening of Tesi, the conversational exchanges of Dialogo, and the brisk, rhythm-driven energy of Gioco. The result is a concise but richly textured essay in late-period modernist orchestral writing.
